What exactly is an Enrolled Agent?

So an enrolled agent is a federally authorized tax practitioner. Enrolled agents have the same authorization as a CPA and a tax attorney. When it comes to representation with the IRS, what’s really unique about an enrolled agent, aside from the fact there’s really only 53,000 practicing in the United States, is that they’re educated in tax law processes, procedures and ethics, everything they do is tax and IRS.

So where CPAs learn a little about a lot and they’re tested a little about a lot of areas, enrolled agents are specifically tested on tax and processes and procedures. People would benefit from coming to an enrolled agent when they really have unique tax situations that require someone to delve into specific tax laws.
